Subject: New twist for the horse thefts

Guys

This mail has come from the PC DC and it appears that the thieves are trying a new tactic - please be aware:

I have been advised by one of the Area Branches that at a recent competition some people went into the lorry/trailer park asking to inspect passports. When asked to provide proof of identity they could not. Please continue to be alert.

Dear All

Unfortunately a 3 day old foal was stolen from a field in Murrow, Nr Wisbech, Cambridgeshire during the day on Thursday 26th June.

Cambs Constabulary ref CF 0332780608.

It is a chocolate brown filly, with black legs, maine and tail. It has a small white star inthe middle of her forehead. Due to her mothers colouring she is starting to go grey around her muzzle and eyes.

Obviously, if she isn't re-united with her mother soon, her chances of survival are slim, so please pass this on in the hope that someone knows something.

The owners of the Leighton Buzzard Stanbridge and District Riding Club, in Stanbridge have reported a suspicious vehicle.

The vehicle was an 07 registered, Silver Ford KA.

The vehicle had 2 male occupants.

Mediterranean in there appearance, both men were 6 foot tall, and stocky in build.

The men were seen scanning the field looking at the horses. They then returned to the vehicle, and sped off towards the A505 by bass.

Although there is no evidence to suggest that these men have committed any offence, the witness felt that their behaviour was suspicious.

Subject: Another Suspicious Vehicle

Can I bring your attention to a serious issue that has arisen
overnight in our area. We received a call from a resident of
Sudbrooke last night letting us know of a suspicious vehicle
seen parked up on West Drive, Sudbrooke just into the wooded
area where the bridge is. That was at around 7.30pm last night.

The vehicle was towing a horsebox, and the two males from the
vehicle were taking photos of horses in the adjacent field.

This was similar to an incident just north of Caistor yesterday
morning, and mirrors other incidents that have been reported
north of the county, as well as in South Yorks and Notts.

We believe that this vehicle. and others like it, are involved
in the theft of horses to order. The photos that are taken of
the horses are put into magazines by the offender offering the
horse for sale. If the offender gets a call from someone who is
interested, and they believe a sale will be made, they return
to where horse is and steal it. The horse is then taken and
shown to the prospective buyer who can see it is the exact same
horse that was in the advert, and to some degree avoid
suspicion.

No horses were stolen from Sudbrooke last night, but it is
concerning that these people have been in our area.

The vehicle involved was a red Toyota Landcruiser, B16 RBB, and
at the time it was seen last night it was towing a horsebox.

The name the vehicle is registered in is fictitious, and the
occupants of the registered address have no knowledge of it.
However, we have had some information that a criminal from the
Lincolnshire area, who has connections to the travelling
community, has access to it and may be using it for this
purpose.

We need to locate this vehicle as soon as possible so we can
find out who is using it, and for what purpose.

If you see the vehicle passing through the area please ring
Lincolnshire Police on 01522 882222 and report the siting.

However if you see the vehicle stationary anywhere near horses
then please ring 999.

Do not approach the vehicle or the males under any
circumstances!!! Those that take part in this kind of activity
have been known to use violence in the past to get away, so
please stay well clear of it and call the police.

I would also be grateful if you could inform anyone you know
who has a horse in our area about this vehicle in case they are
not on this list. I know many are already aware, but your help
in reaching those that aren't would be appreciated.

Many Thanks

Mark (PC Lassmans)

A vehicle crime took place at the Equestrian Centre, in Keysoe, on Wednesday the 11th of June, between 2:00, and 2:50 in the afternoon.

The vehicle owner had left the vehicle locked in the car park at the front of the location.

The offender approached the vehicle and smashed a side window.

A handbag was taken from the front passenger seat.

Many Vehicle crimes can be prevented.

Taking a few seconds of your time to clear property from your car, can prevent the inconvenience of a broken window or a damaged door.

Even a cradle for a Satellite Navigation System, or Mobile phone, will encourage a criminal that there are valuables in the car.

Dear All

There has been further information received about people photographing horses, possibly with the intention of their theft to order. The vehicles are a White Van registration number N253 XAJ and a Red Land cruiser registration number B16 RBBOne of the registration numbers involved may not match the vehicle so it is important that if you do report an event your information must be as accurate as it can be.  Alternatively the number plate may be a clone so a good description of the vehicle is vital.  So far no crimes have been linked to these reports but we must be on our guard.  Some reports mention two males, others a male and female. A number of horse theft reports have sprung up surrounding these events.  We are aware that the apparent theft of large numbers of horses at one time are actually hoaxes.  There have been individual thefts and the details of these are posted on the stolen horse register.  www.stolenhorseregister.com  Where a theft has occurred owners are advised to contact Horsewatch and the SHR to register their details, a crime number is an essential part of a posting and must be supplied. We will continue to keep owners updated via the Horsewatch Bulletin and if you have information to report please contact your local non emergency Police number or Horsewatch via our website  www.ukhorsewatch.org.uk  Please pass this message on to all of your friends.

Message received 17th April 2008 regarding RELAUNCH OF BEDS HORSEWATCH

Please find attached a poster advertising the relaunch of the scheme, with full police support.

This is the first meeting, aimed mainly at the N Beds rural area, but open to anyone, and another has already been organised for the South of the County at T C Feeds Kensworth on 21st May. Let me know if further details are required.

Then on Friday 30th May at Shuttleworth Equine Unit, Old Warden Nr Biggleswade Kelly Marks will be holding a Masterclass. See attached link for details.
http://www.kellymarks.co.uk/content.asp?id=4&doc=212

At this event, the Assistant Chief Constable of Bedforshire Police will be attending in support of Horsewatch, and other police officers and Horsewatch members will be there to provide information, answer queries and to complete new Ringmaster & membership forms.

So please get yourself tickets to this exciting event.

Following on from the launches, Police and Beds Horsewatch will then have a presence at various venues, around the County. Members will be supported in organising tack-marking and freezemarking sessions. Frontier (previously Banks ) at Sunday have already agreed to providing space in their feed store for tack-marking on a Saturday morning.

With this new initiative, I really do think that the last 5 years of persistence have paid off, and the police are now behind Beds Horsewatch. You could make contact with the local Beat Managers and PCSO's in your own areas, ask for a meeting to be held at which you can discuss the issues important to you, and suggest ways of improving security and the reduction of crime. If there is any lack of enthusiasm from those personnel, we will now be able to approach senior officers for assistance..

Please pass the message and attachments to anyone who may be interested, and ask your local feed stores and tackshops to put up a poster.

Let me know if you do have any queries.

This is a Ringmaster Messages to all members in the Bedfordshire area, who may have been using the M1 motorway on the morning of Thursday the 22nd of May.

Please forward this message to any friends or relatives that may have been in the area at the time.

Did YOU See Incident on M1?

BEDFORDSHIRE Police are appealing for witnesses to an incident that happened on the hard shoulder of the M1 in the early hours of yesterday morning (Thursday, May 22).

It happened at around 7.36am on the northbound carriage, near junction 11, where it appears there was an exchange between the driver of a blue VW Polo and a blue Peugeot.

One of the drivers, a man in his 20s, sustained head injuries and was taken to the Luton & Dunstable Hospital and later transferred to the Royal Free in London where he is in a serious condition.

DI Gary White, of the Beds and Herts Major Crime Unit, wants to establish how the victim sustained his injuries and why.

He is keen to speak to anyone who was on the motorway around that time and saw either vehicle travelling along the motorway or stationary on the hard shoulder.

Anyone with information can contact police, in confidence, on 01707-355959, the main switchboard on 01234 841212 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Please can you alert everyone that you know and put something on the website.

I had my garage broken into this afternoon - thieves smashed through the reinforced heavy doors with a pick up or 4 X 4 with a ball hitch and stole 4 saddles: -

a black leather with suede seat Portuguese saddle
a brown leather Pennwood Lightweight jumping saddle
a black leather with suede seat Albion dressage saddle
a tan Western Saddle with leather cinch (oak leaves tooled into it), and a tan breastplate with metal strips attached to it. It also had a brown horse hair tassle on the breastplate clip that attaches to the girth and a dark brown rear cinch.

Most upsetting of all was that the dressage saddle and jumping saddle are all that I have left of my old horse who died last year two days after I got married.

Sarah

Message received 1st April 2008:

Just to make you all aware - our tack room was broken into last night in West Wratting, Cambridgeshire, and at least 3 saddles stolen including 2 inside a metal tack locker. Not sure what else has been taken yet.

Theiving b*stards - it makes me so cross this attitude of simply taking whatever they want!

Another friend in Western Coleville (next village) had a break in whilst she was in hospital giving birth a couple of weeks ago, they took all her jewellery including engagement and wedding rings amoungst other stuff.

Thanks
Jo

For further information -

One of the saddles stolen was a custom made nearly brand new (bought in Dec 07) Heather Moffatt Fhoenix (old design) in black. It's a very large saddle and is without the detachable knee rolls. It has a higher cantle than the standard saddles as it was made specifically for the horse, so will hopefully stand out. As yet, I don't know the serial number of it, but will post this as soon as I get it.

If anyone has any reason to think they know the whereabouts of this saddle - please let me know.

Please forward this information to others - friends, family etc. The more people that are potentially aware of being sold a stolen saddle - the better.

I have been in touch with HM to make them aware and also just incase someone contacts them to buy any knee rolls seperately in the next few days.

But...... are your saddles marked? If stolen and then recovered, would the police know how to get them back to you? Have you reduced the desirability of your tack by having it marked? Phone Sue on 07971 853881 for an appointment to get your saddle post-coded FOR FREE. (A donation to our sponsored charity would be appreciated, though!)

Message received 15th January 2008:

Hopefully we will get a Ringmaster message shortly, but in the meantime, look out for (and report) suspicious activity, visit your yards at irregular intervals, and mark everything, yes everything, with your post-code.

And of course don't leave your tack on yards, take it home.

Make sure you know who your local police officers and PCSOs are and ask them to patrol the rural areas.

Keep safe

Hello Rowena

It happened between 7.00am and 11.00am today, Tuesday 15th Jan 2008.  The location being Chalton, nr Blunham and Moggerhanger, Beds.  The Bedfordshire Police are dealing with it, sorry crime ref is at home.

They used bolt croppers to remove the padlock from the main gate and drove in.  They then went through all the stables, turning the contents upside down.  They even pulled out an opened large bale of haylage into the yard to look behind it.  On the final stable door, they used bolt croppers on the clasp as the padlock was too strong, and again turned the contents upside down.

It appears they took nothing.  And then on leaving left the main gate to the stables from the road, wide open.  Luckily an internal gate prevented the horses from straying onto the road.

The police seem to think there is a gang at the moment specifically targeting yards for horse tack etc.

Regards

Nicky

Dear All

Below is a message relating to the recent events in Amersham.

I would like to reassure you that Thames Valley Horsewatch were aware of the individual concerned, as were the police and trading standards. Sadly things had to reach this point before the RSPCA acted.

Unfortunately, all our previous efforts could not prevent this awful situation from developing, please do not think we did not try.

More news information can be found on the BBC website and on Horse and Hound online. There is plenty of comment in the HH forum as you might imagine.

If you would like to help please make a donation to the horse charities, contact then direct if you wish to give rugs, feed etc. Visits to their sites will be restricted as you will appreciate.

Good Afternoon,

I'm contacting you regarding suspicious behaviour in Blunham, Beds. A
man was spotted hanging around by the entrance to our horses' field. The
field is within a cul-de-sac, so other than contracted workmen and
residents, there is no reason for someone to be there. When he realised
he'd been seen, he briskly walked out of the cul-de-sac onto the main
road where he was watched getting into a large white van (possibly a
Ford Transit) and drove off.

I'm sure this applies everywhere, but please be alert in Beds, Herts, Cambs at the moment.

There are reports of stolen trailers, tack-thefts and suspicious markings scratched on stable doors. All within last 24hrs.

So, look out and be VERY vigilant. Make notes of anything out of the ordinary, but the police do need full details. Get the make model & Reg No of any vehicle. 'White van' is not enough!!

Same applies to the occupants.

Visit your horses and yards at irregular intervals, talk to your neighbours and share information with them.

Don't make it easy for the thieves, please, and keep safe

Message received 1st December 2007:

Sounds rather dramatic and most likely you'll never need this advice. But better safe than sorry...

Some sound advice for us all as we all sometimes forget to take our common
sense with us when we go out. This is from Northants Police..

Women.... In light of the recent kidnapping and now murder of Leigh Mathews
I think it is important to read the following info for your own safety.
Things women should know to stay safe: Please Take the time to read these
pointers. There may just be one or two you hadn't thought of. After
reading this, forward it to someone you care about. It never hurts to be
careful in this crazy world we live in.

1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If
you are close enough to use it, do!

2. If a robber asks for your handbag, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away
from you.... he is probably more interested in your handbag than you and he
will go for the handbag. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!

3. If you are ever thrown into the boot of a car: Kick out the back tail
lights and stick your arm through the hole and start waving. The driver
won't see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives.

4.Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating,
working, etc., and just sit (doing their cheque book, or making a list).

DON'T DO THIS! A predator could be watching you, and this is the perfect
opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, and attack you. AS
SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.

5. A few notes about getting into your car in a car park:

A.) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side
floor, and check the back seat.

B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger
door. Most attackers surprise their victims by pulling them into their vans
while the women are attempting to get into their cars.

C.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the
passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car,
you may want to walk back into the shop, or work, and get a guard/policeman
to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And
better paranoid than dead.)

6. ALWAYS take the lift instead of the stairs. Stairwells are horrible
places to be alone and the perfect crime spot.

7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN!
The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; and even
then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN!

8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP IT! It may get
you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking,
well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting
women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked 'for help' into
his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.

9. Another Safety Point: Someone just told me that her friend heard a
crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police
because it was late and she thought it was weird. The police told her
'Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door.' The lady then said that it sounded
like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would
crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, 'We already have
a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door.' He told her that
they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax
women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby. He said
they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that
they hear babies' cries outside their doors when they're home alone at
night.

Please pass this on and DO NOT open the door for a crying baby.

I'd like you to forward this to all the women you know. It may save a life.

A candle is not dimmed by lighting another candle. Send this to any woman
you know that may need to be reminded that the world we live in has a lot
of crazies in it and it's better safe than sorry.

PLEASE READ. MAY BE HELPFUL AND PLEASE TAKE CARE!!

ALL CAR OWNERS AND CAR DRIVERS PLEASE READ Warning!!!!
Be aware of new car-jacking scheme.
You walk across the car park, unlock your car and get inside. Then you
lock all your doors, start the engine and shift or put into reverse.
You look into the rear-view mirror to back out of your parking space and
you notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle of the rear window.
So, you shift the gear stick back into park or neutral, unlock your
doors and jump out of your car to remove that paper or whatever it is
that is obstructing your view.
When you reach the back of your car that is when the car-jackers
appear out of nowhere, jump into your car and take off!!
Your engine was running, you would have left your purse in the car and
they practically mow you down as they speed off in your car. BE AWARE OF THIS NEW SCHEME THAT IS NOW BEING USED IN
LONDON/MANCHESTER MAKING ITS WAY ACROSS THE COUNTRY!!!!!!!!
Just drive away and remove the paper later! It is stuck to your window
and be thankful that you read this email.
I hope you will forward this to friends and family especially to
women! A purse contains all identification, and you certainly do NOT
want someone getting your home address. They already HAVE your keys!!!
JUST BE AWARE AND TAKE CARE IT WILL PROBABLY SOON ARRIVE IN YOUR AREA
Brian Molloy
Detective Constable
Force Intelligence Bureau
Strathclyde Police
0141 532 5867

I have also heard of a similar car-jacking scheme being carried out by
leaving a traffic cone in the road in a relatively quiet area...so you stop
and get out of your car to move it...leaving your engine running...sure you
can work out the rest.

BE AWARE !

Last Thursday afternoon PS Hunt received a phone call from a member of the Community in Stocking Pelham reporting a vehicle acting suspiciously around the National Grid Power Station which has been subject to recent thefts. PS Wallace and PC Miller were despatched and through good use of local knowledge managed to cut off the vehicle in Hunsdon travelling towards Harlow. It was a Range Rover towing a Ifor Williams trailer with three occupants. The trailer has been stolen from the outskirts of Bishops Stortford approximately one hour earlier. Six horse blankets were found in the vehicle and had come from a burglary at Upwick during that afternoon, also a petrol strimmer in the vehicle has been identified as having been stolen from Barwick. All three occupants were arrested and searches made of their homes, more suspect property was found. All three have been charged with various dishonesty offences and was a good example of local Neighbourhood contacts, local knowledge and team working between all departments to secure the arrests. So don't forget to ring the police on 0845 33 00 222 if you see anything suspicious Jill Dockley Watch Liaison Officer East Herts 01992 533043 07970 838968

Was advised to drop you an e-mail regarding two men I discovered taking an >
interest in my horses. They had parked a dark red Rover (reg P783
POD) in front of our neighbours' house and walked up the private track
behind our house where my 4 horses are kept. As we approached them through
the field they quickly walked off. I came through our house to try and catch
the reg no of their car and they were just reversing off the drive and
drove off quickly. The one I saw clearly was late 20s early 30s, about
5'8, closely cropped hair and an olive complexion. The other one was
about the same height but I didn't see him very clearly. Might have
been nothing but I'm worried now as I have a traditional cob of the type
very much in demand.

Hi

A horse owner spotted people in her field in Haslingfield, South Cambs, and on closer inspection the horses were found to have had their tails plaited. The thinking is that the horses were singled out for theft, and the plaiting is some kind of signal or identification.

Better to be wise before the event.
