Message received 4th February 2010:

Dear All

It seems that trailers are the thing to steal at the moment.  Most are never seen again so mark yours with a home postcode inside and out.  There are self adhesive roof postcodes available, see the other attachment.

Another tack recovery again shows that no marking makes it hard to return to the owners.  Home postcode again is the easiest.

Take care

Message received 28th January 2010:

(Note from Sue: a lot of these scam warnings are rubbish, but this actually happened to my Uncle, so it's worth reading through and being on your guard)

WILTSHIRE POLICE   Keeping you informed

Newsletter 2nd October 2009    Swindon Police Station Gablecross Shrivenham Road South Marston Swindon  Wiltshire SN3 4RB Telephone: 0845 408 7000
Swindon Crime Reduction Department    Date: 2nd October 2009

Hi all,

This has been passed on via another Force area through our own Fraud Department In Wiltshire Constabulary, and it is a very convincing SCAM. We have been asked to disseminate the information as widely and was quickly as we can through Neighbourhood Watch, School Safe and others.

This one is pretty slick since they provide YOU with all the information, except the one piece they want. Note, the callers do not ask for your card number; they already have it. This information is worth reading. By understanding how the VISA & MasterCard Telephone Credit Card Scam works, you'll be better prepared to protect yourself.

One of our employees was called on Wednesday from "VISA", and I was called on Thursday from "MasterCard". The scam works like this:

Person calling says, "This is (name), and I'm calling from the Security and Fraud Department at VISA. My badge number is 12460. Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I'm calling to verify. This would be on your VISA card which was issued by (name of bank) did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Device for £497.99 from a Marketing company based in London?" When you say "No", the caller continues with, "Then we will be issuing a credit to your account. This is a company we have been watching and the charges range from £297 to £497, just under the £500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (gives you your address), is that correct?" You say "yes". The caller continues - "I will be starting a fraud investigation. If you have any questions, you should call the 0800 number listed on the back of your card (0800-VISA) and ask for Security. You will need to refer to this Control Number. The caller then gives you a 6 digit number. "Do you need me to read it again?"

Here's the IMPORTANT part on how the scam works the caller then says, "I need to verify you are in possession of your card." He'll ask you to "turn your card over and look for some numbers." There are 7 numbers; the first 4 are part of your card number, the next 3 are the security numbers that verify you are the possessor of the card. These are the numbers you sometimes use to make Internet purchases to prove you have the card. The caller will ask you to read the 3 numbers to him. After you tell the caller the 3 numbers, he'll say, "That is correct, I just needed to verify that the card has not been lost or stolen, and that you still have your card. Do you have any other questions?" After you say, "No," the caller then thanks you and states, "Don't hesitate to call back if you do", and hangs up. You actually say very little, and they never ask for or tell you the Card number .

But after we were called on Wednesday, we called back within 20 minutes to ask a question. Are we glad we did! The REAL VISA Security Department told us it was a scam and in the last 15 minutes a new purchase of £497.99 was charged to our card. Long story - short - we made a real fraud report and closed the VISA account. VISA is reissuing us a new number. What the scammers want is the 3-digit PIN number on the back of the card.  Don't give it to them. Instead, tell them you'll call VISA or MasterCard directly for verification of their conversation. The real VISA told us that they will never ask for anything on the card as they already know the information since they issued the card! If you give the scammers your 3 Digit PIN Number, you think you're receiving a credit. However, by the time you get your statement you'll see charges for purchases you didn't make, and by then it's almost too late and/or more difficult to actually file a fraud report.

What makes this more remarkable is that on Thursday, I got a call from a "Jason Richardson of MasterCard" with a word-for-word repeat of the VISA scam. This time I didn't let him finish. I hung up! We filed a police report, as instructed by VISA. The police said they are taking several of these reports daily! They also urged us to tell everybody we know that this scam is happening .

Please pass this on to all your family and friends. By informing each other, we protect each other.

STOLEN HORSES - TINKERBELL AND BAILEY

Two miniature horses were stolen on the night of December 29th, 2009. Their owner recently bought Bailey and Tinkerbell as a way of getting back into horses after a riding accident 3 years ago which left him paralysed from the chest down and in a wheelchair. They are the ideal size to groom and take for walks and their owner was planning on showing them this year.

Their owner would be very grateful for any help as he is completely distraught about losing two very much loved family members.

[ - Bedford - 11/11/09 Horse Watch HiViz]

This is a Ringmaster message to all Horse Watch members, from Bedfordshire Police.

Please pass the details of this message, to any staff, business contacts, or neighbours.

A member of Horsewatch has reported that pony has run off, and become lost after the rider was unseated.

A search was conducted, that night without success, but a further search in the morning found the pony in nearby woods. The pony had only suffered a small graze.

The incident took place when it was dark, but only the rider was wearing a HiViz tabard. It is possible that if the pony was wearing HiViz, it may have been found earlier.

The member also recommended that both riders and horse wear HiViz so they can be easily seen by other road users, or spotted if there is an accident.

Subject: Plaits found on horses

Dear horse owners

On Monday (2 Nov) night my friend’s horse was stolen from a field in the Guildford area. The people who took her sawed through a wooden post and rail fence to get out and this happened between 3pm and 6pm in the afternoon.

The police were informed and so were the microchip company who circulated her details to all the ferry ports etc.

As you can imagine the owner was completely distraught.

Late Tuesday (3 Nov) afternoon she received a phone call from the police to say her horse had been found in Hollyhead, Wales. She was tied to a railing at the ferry port and the ferry to Ireland had gone without her. So today she is driving to Wales to pick her up.

Several things have come to light in this story:

1. A week ago her horse had a small plait in its mane when she went to get her in from the field. She describes it as very small, almost like a tangle. She disregarded it as kids messing about (her horses are out in a field with others). However, this is how people mark horses to be stolen later. Ie. One person marks them, another then comes later and knows which one to take.

2. The ferry port at Hollyhead do not check horses passports or microchips. This horse was travelling without a passport.

3. The police believe the reason this horse was left behind was because she was microchipped. Although the UK is lax about passport and microchip checking, it is apparently more common for horses to be scanned on entering Ireland. The people who take them will scan them and dump them if they find a microchip. This horse also had a large obvious scar so this may have been a contributing factor.

The police told her that horses being dumped at a ferry terminal is not uncommon and they usually turn out to be stolen. They have had horses left in a lorry on the actually ferry!

This story has a happy ending for H and E, but it makes you wonder how many other stolen horses were on that ferry to Ireland.

The owner has asked me not to give any more details because of the police investigation that is on going, but has given her permission for me to relay this story, mainly to highlight:

1. If you find your horse with a small plait in its mane or tail please do not ignore it. I thought it was common knowledge that people knew about this, but several people I've spoken to since were not aware of it. 2. If your horse isn’t microchipped please consider doing it. The owner of this horse describes her as ‘nothing flashy, just a normal 14.2 bay mare’ so please don’t think it couldn’t happen to you.

Please do not ask me to provide more details regarding the horse or owner as I can’t, but please spare a happy thought today for H and E who should be having a (probably very emotional) reunion in Hollyhead later on today.

Please forward this email onto any other horsey people you know. The more people who know about plaits and microchips the better...

Nicky.x

Thank you for reading and please be alert to this plaiting - keep an eye on your own horses and also neighbours!

This is a Ringmaster message to all Horse Watch members, from Bedfordshire Police.

Farmkey have received word from a customer saying that a man had just come onto their yard, stating that he worked for Farmkey and needed to see the passports of their horses to check they had a record of the Freezemark number on the passport. We think that the man had gathered that the horses are freezemarked by Farmkey from the gate sign that they had on the paddock. When the customer queried this, the man produced a card with the Farmkey logo and photograph ID saying that his name was Martin. Farmkey state that they do not have a technician called Martin and that they do not give photograph ID. They also advise that people do not allow anyone onto their yard without a prior appointment or checking with the Farmkey Office before allowing access.
